How To Get A Motorcycle License In Oklahoma [Easy Guide]

How To Get a Motorcycle License In Oklahoma

You can enjoy thousands of scenic drives on the roads of Oklahoma, but driving in your car won’t feel as heavenly as doing so on your motorcycle.

Motorcycle drives give us a fantastic feeling of freedom, especially when combined with exploring Wichita Mountains, Cherokee Hills Byway, or watching the sunset on the breathtaking Route 66.

But to do this, you must first apply for a permit or a motorcycle driving license. This article is for you if you want to know the steps and rules of the two processes.

Getting a Motorcycle License in Oklahoma

If you want to ride your motorcycle in Oklahoma without breaking any legal rules, you must obtain a motorcycle permit or license of Class M. If you already have a basic driving license, you can add an endorsement that allows you to drive motorcycles on the streets of Oklahoma.

Note that the following departments are the ones that monitor the motorcycle license requirements there: The Department of Public Safety (DPS), The Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), and The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV),

Should I Get a Permit or a License

This depends on your age. If you’re above 16 years old, you’re eligible to apply for a license. But if you’re under 16, you can apply for a permit. Let’s see the needed requirements for each one.

Applying for a Permit

Before you apply for a permit, you must fill the application form. You’ll find a vision test in the application, which you should pass before submitting it. Note that you should submit the original copy of the application to the office in person. And that permit applicants need to enroll in a driver’s education program.

You should also provide the office with recent proof of identity. And the final step before receiving your permit is passing the examination.

You should know that this exam includes theoretical questions only, examining your knowledge of road signs and traffic laws. But don’t worry because there are trial exams on the DMV’s official site where you can practice before taking your exam.

Having a permit mainly enables you to practice your driving skills. Later, when you’re above 16 years old, you shall convert this permit into a license by taking more exams.

Restrictions of Having a Permit

Yes, you’re allowed to drive a motorcycle with a permit, but you should follow some restrictions and rules. Let’s see what these are.

  • You should always be accompanied by a licensed motorcycle driver above 21 years old
  • You can drive from 4:30 am to 9:00 pm only
  • Wear a helmet
  • You should never exceed 35 miles per hour
  • Never go on highways with minimum speed limits

Applying for a License

You can enter the license exam after having the permit for 180 days. This exam is, of course, practical, so you’ll be asked to drive your motorcycle. There will also be a vision test as well as a written one. If you obtain your license, you’ll be able to drive without the supervision of an adult.

License Requirements

There is some paperwork you must have to get your license in Oklahoma, and they include the following:

  • Your birth certificate
  • A US-based passport
  • A reserve, active duty, or retired ID card of US military
  • Marriage certificate, if any
  • Parental consent form

Getting a License If You’re Under 18

If you’re under 18 years old and want to get a motorcycle license, you must first take the motorcycle education course from a state-approved school.

This course covers the safety measures riders should be aware of, including knowing how to use the brakes, turn safely and learn about shifting gears. Learners are also taught how to know the right and safe path to take and handle emergencies.

These courses have different lengths according to the school you join, but all classes must be 15 hours long and last for at least three days. Also, students should spend five hours in class and 10 hours riding their motorcycles.

Final Thoughts

Now that you’ve known Oklahoma’s regulations regarding motorcycle licenses and permits, you know that it’s not a hectic process. Apply now so you can quickly enjoy Oklahoma’s beautiful roads.
